HISTORY

1973 is a particular year for the car manufecturer of Maranello because of the birth of a model different from the usual vehicles marked by the Cavallino rampante: the Dino 308 gt4.

At the beginning this car was characterised by the "Cavallino rampante" only in its soul, in fact it  was produced and commercialized with the trademark Dino until 1976, when the famous trademark "Cavallino rampante" began to be associated with the other one to increase the sales but also the popularity of this model.

Far from the stylistic canons which characterised the other vehicles of the "Drake", the Dino 308 gt4 was the result of the work of Nuccio Bertone, who for the first and last time designed a Ferrari road-car.

Analising the sales, the model of Bertone was not appreciated by the Ferrari customers of that period who were accostumed to other "shapes", but I have to say that he managed in a very complex deed: designing a car with a 2550mm wheel base, which could contains four people and with a reasonable luggage van.

This was made possible thanks to the choice of organizing the rear central engine in a trasversal position.

The engine, which is for the first time an 8 crushing rolls, is an important feature which makes this model a very particular one of the Ferrari production.

The choice of an 8 crushing rolls engine was such a winning choice that the Ferrari production is divided in 8 and 12 crushing rolls still today.

The model Dino Ferrari 308 gt4 had been producing for 7 years, until 1980 without undergoing substantial modifications.

Only for the overseas trade the car manufecturer Ferrari produced a different version of the Dino 308 gt4 with sun-roof, reinforced bumper, direction-indicator in the chassis-body and other details. PHOTO

At the end of the Dino 308 gt4's carrer 2826 models had been sold.

From 1973 to 1980 the car manufecturer Ferrari didn't produced the Dino only in the 308 version. In fact in 1975 the 308 model had been flanked by a different version called Dino 208 gt4.

The Dino 208 gt4 had been presented at the Genev lounge as the "younger sister" of the 308 gt4 because it differed from the other one for some details such as the absence of fog-light ( introduced later), terminal single discharge and smaller tyres, but also for the propeller, a 2 litres of 170 horsepower.

The reason of this choice is linked to the fiscal pressure, which in this years, charachterised by a crisis in the petroil sector, imposed heavy taxes on cars which exceed 2 litres of capacity.

The 208 gt4 as older sister didn't have such a great success because of its particular shape but also its engine which was not the best for the Ferrari customers since its performances were limited compared to the 3 litres model and the other Ferrari models they are accostumed to.

842 models of Dino 208 gt4 had been produced at all and the sales' negativ record had been registered in 1978, in which 24 models had been sold.

Despite the negative success, because of its particularity it became, under certain aspects, such an exclusive car that vip from all over the world, searching a particular model, often choose the Dino for theyr private collection. For exemple Elvis Presley who buy in 1975 a black Dino 308 gt4 which is still exhibited in the Elvis's museum of Graceland Mansion in Menphis.

In the gt4's history a unique model is introduced, fitted by Bertone too, in the coupè version. This is a Dino 208 gt4 which carries the serial number 13956 which have travelled about 90.000 km PHOTO

As older sister the 208 gt4 had been producing until 1980.

Today this is a model which is becoming interesting for many collectors and fans of the "Cavallino".
